What’s Pefect?

   Posted by: Shane   in Ministry

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Practice makes perfect”, and we all also know that isn’t true. My high school football coach used to tell us that the correct philosophy was actually “Perfect practice makes perfect”. As I’ve grown older the usefulness of that inspiration has faded because to have perfect practice wouldn’t you need to have a perfect pre-practice and to pull that off you’d need perfect preparation for pre-practice and on and on? At some point we all have to come to the conclusion that perfection isn’t really possible for us.

Maybe the right idea, then, is to not shoot for perfection but to simply shoot to avoid being awful. The philosophy of the 6 P’s, “Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance” is a good start. No doubt that time spent in planning will always lead to a higher level of performance. I can testify that the better we plan at NewSpring the better the execution and end result of anything we do. A well executed plan that results in a higher level of performance certainly provides a great feeling but it doesn’t provide perfection. We can always find ways to improve everything we do.

But yesterday… I think NewSpring got a glimpse of something better than perfection… we got to see “immeasurably more”! Ephesians 3:20-21 happened at NewSpring yesterday. If you haven’t already, check out what Perry and Tony had to say about what we saw God do yesterday.

A “What” will never be perfect, but there is a “Who” that is! Because God is perfect, He alone can give to us immeasurably more!

I believe we are called to work and strive and plan and prepare and pour as much of our energy into what we do as we can. When we do that we will see the benefit and feel the joy of I Corinthians 10:31. I believe we should seek to achieve excellence in all we do… knowing God gave his best to us and we should always give our best for Him. Then… at the end of that effort… wait and watch as God, at times, makes what we think would be perfect look like a minor achievement compared to His idea of immeasurably more!

Shane, I think you brought it home in the end. It is all about giving our best. We will never reach perfection, no matter how hard we try. But if we give our best, laying it all at God’s feet, He will be honored by it. And we will be amazed how he will use it in ways that we can not even begin to imagine.
