Two Hands vs. One Prayer

“Two hands working accomplish more than a thousand clasped in prayer” – Anonymous

Maybe you’ve heard this quote before, but I only recently stumbled upon it. It was posted in the comment section of an article posted on my local paper’s web-site (Anderson Independent-Mail). All for One Prayer was the title of the article. The article focused on NewSpring’s participation in the historic series OnePrayer and offered thoughts by LifeChurch.tv’s pastor, Craig Groeschel. I searched the internet to find the author of this quote and maybe some of the thoughts behind it. My searched found many references to the quote but in all of the references the one who produced the quote was simply referred to as Anonymous.

I find it interesting that this quote is offered in the comments of someone who is unknown except by an internet user name. This unknown person then offers his or her allegiance to the wisdom of someone who remains anonymous.

I, and many others, will offer our allegiance to Jesus, the One who is known by name and in who’s name prayer is made effective.

Two hands working 24 hours a day could never accomplish even one of the many things Jesus displayed through prayer.

Through prayer Jesus…

Healed the sick
Repaired the broken
Fed thousands
Empowered his disciples
Raised the dead
Forgave his assassins
Returned from the grave

I will be the first to say that we need to “do work” and that that two hands can accomplish a lot. But, there will never be enough hands on enough people to accomplish something so great as what the simple prayer of one person in one moment can accomplish for one life.

Right on! I was thinking this: It’s not about me, it’s about Him. That’s the bottom line. To think that my two hands working can do more than what God can do with a thousand prayers is thinking that I am more capable than God! Dangerous, but we all have fallen there at one time or another.

  2. Justin Dean says:

I think it was Bill Hybels who said, “When I work, I work. When I pray, God works.”

Who do you think is more productive?

…God made everything in 6 days.

  3. Raphael says:

Through prayer Jesus has done many things. We are praying for the world to be a better place? Is it happening? NO? Well i know why. Because it is God’s will right? So we are puppets. Then again, why do the innocent suffer and the bad flourish? God’s plan. Ok I understand.

Plus, God made everything in 6 days right? Was that before dinosaurs? Because at least Science has facts even without certainty. But you have certainty without facts.

When you are weak, you need to cling on a belief that doesn’t make sense. It’s things like these that slow our progress as humans. We are well educated in this era anyway.

  4. Haley says:

Guess what.God and jesus are not real they are both part of a 100% pure fiction book that was written by some idiot who got bored.Praying is wasting precious time of your life, talking to your self.Nothing happens when you pray.Evolution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Raphael & Haley – I guess it would be obvious that I would disagree with each of your takes on prayer, God and Jesus. But, I am open to further discussion if I can help you as you continue to wrestle with and consider such ideas. Feel free to email me at shane.duffey@newspring.cc
