Driving Lessons

When I was learning to drive I got suggestions from everyone. “ten & two”, “buckle Up”, “don’t over correct”, “too fast”, “too slow”, and on and on. When you’re 15 all you really want to do is drive… driving equals freedom… driving equals manhood!

The best advice I received while learning to drive was from my step dad. To this day (25 years later), I can hear him saying these words, “All you have to do is follow the 5 Rules of Defensive Driving”. He would then proceed to recite them for me (in a giant & perfect baritone voice):

1. Aim High in Steering
2. Keep Your Eyes Moving
3. Leave Yourself An Out
4. Make Sure They See You
5. Back Up Only When Necessary

Having a 14 year old son who is chomping at the bit to drive gets me excited about passing on this lesson. I have hopes he’ll turn out to be a better driver than me.

What’s odd is that these five rules for driving have become something that I actually look to as a guide in every area of my life… especially in leading a production team that is responsible for pulling off church at NewSpring each week.

Over the next few days I’ll unpack each rule and tell you how it has applied to my driving… my life… and my leadership.
